Background
We report the results of a pilot study of theATARAXclinical trial database in adults with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We identified 1,947 patients with mild to moderate GAD who received at least 2 placebo capsules, and 1,947 patients with moderate to severe GAD who received at least 10 daily doses of at least two doses of atenolol, a new anxiolytic. Of these, 1,093 received both a placebo and ATARAX atenolol.
Methods
Data on patients treated with either ATARAX or atenolol at doses of 1, 5, 10, or 20 mg per day were extracted from the clinical trial database, and a total of 1,947 patients were included in the ATARAX and atenolol groups. The trial was conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
Results
Atenolol (1 mg per day) was the most commonly prescribed drug for GAD. The most common adverse events were headache, dry mouth, insomnia, and drowsiness. The most common primary and secondary endpoints were change in anxiety scores for the ATARAX group and change in the ATARAX group.
Conclusion
In the ATARAX and atenolol groups, there were a significant difference in the efficacy of ATARAX versus atenolol, indicating that the ATARAX group had a more significant reduction in anxiety symptoms than the ATARAX group.
